Trustee Training
Under the Pensions Act, it is mandatory for all pension scheme trustees to attend trustee training.  This training must be undertaken every 2 years. Newly appointed trustees must attend training within six months of their appointment.  Directors of a company which is acting as a corporate trustee must also receive training as set out above.

Trustees are liable to an on-the-spot fine of up to €2,000, enforced by the Pensions Authority, should a trustee or any director of a corporate trustee fail to undergo the compulsory training.  Where an employer breaches their obligation to provide appropriate training, they may be prosecuted.

Willis have developed a number of courses that are tailored to suit the individual needs of each trustee and the type of pension scheme.  Willis is registered as a trustee trainer with the Pensions Authority.  These practical and up to date training courses will be carried out by senior, highly-skilled professionals, who have many years’ experience of working in the pensions industry dealing with trusteeship issues on a day to day basis.

These courses will take place in our offices in Dublin. Courses will also be available in Cork and Limerick, subject to demand. 

What we provide:

  • Comprehensive courses designed to meet the needs of busy professionals.  Training will last as follows:
    • For new trustees, approximately 3 hours for DC attendees, DB attendees must remain on for an extra hour (approximately) to complete the additional defined benefit course material.
    • For existing trustees who are attending a refresher course, approximately 1.45 hours for DC attendees, DB attendees must remain on for an 45 minutes (approximately) to complete the additional defined benefit course material.
  • An interactive course with work-shops, practical examples and case studies all incorporated into a half day course to bring trustees fully up to speed
  • Participants are encouraged to fully engage in the training and share their experiences and discuss topics with both our experts and other attendees
  • Content designed to facilitate the experience and knowledge of the trustee
  • Participants who have attended trustee training will receive a Certificate of Attendance, confirming they have completed Pensions Act trustee training requirements. 

Who should attend?

  • Trustees who are required to take this training due to regulatory requirements i.e.
    • Existing trustees that need the training to avoid the 2 year deadline
    • First-time and new trustees within 6 months of appointment, including any new directors of companies who are corporate trustees
  • Finance and HR executives / managers with responsibility associated with a pension plan or who wish to gain a greater knowledge about pensions
  • Plan administrators - this course will provide participants with up to date knowledge and the background to enable them to carry out their duties to the best advantage of their employers and members.
